New Coach for 2017

ScottCommFoundationlogo

Now that we have played the final game of the regular season or the first game of the playoffs the coaching carousal has begun. Salina-Sacred Heart’s Bruce Graber resigned Friday night after a long career of coaching high school football.

We knew that Andale’s Gary O’Hair had turned in his papers and said this was the end of his coaching career in Kansas and he is moving to New Mexico. Rural Vista’s coach Jeff Hostetter has also turned in his last coaching job. (Prep Power Index Tim Hostetter is a brother. Hope he doesn’t quit anytime soon.)

So if you have positive acknowledgements of head football coach resignations and new head football coach’s please let me hear from you. I don’t like rumors and one Principal and A.D. in the state is already mad at me for listing his head coaching job as open last year. I got them confused with another school and just stunk it up.

We had a change in the top spot in Class 4A Division II after Pratt defeated Holcomb last Friday night. That is the only significant change in the rankings this week. We will rank teams one more time after this Friday nights games and then will wait until the season is all over with to do one final ranking for the entire season.

Although, in Class 5A the ranking team has all of a sudden had difficulty in deciding who should be ranked number one! I liked Pat Strathman KSAL Salina story on KSAL website where he put Class 5A teams in the hat and found his winners that way. This 5A classification is going to be very competitive and the games will be close. Sounds like special teams, field position, penalties and turnovers will decide the winner of these games.

The post season is almost here and is actually here for 6A and 5A and other classes where district games will decide those that go on and those that will stay home. Other than the beginning of football season in September, late October and playoff time is the best time of the entire season.

Get out of the house and go to a high school football game this Friday night. Go get a hamburger or popcorn and stand around and visit with your neighbors. High school football games are the best party in town, every Friday night!

You might wonder why each week we seem to have a different number for the first place votes in each of our classifications? It is easy to explain.

We have 20 guys listed as being part of our Kansas Media ranking team from across the state of Kansas. But each week not everyone remembers to send in their rankings to us here at www.kansasprepfootball.com and that is why some weeks you will have 16 first place votes and other weeks you will have 14 or 18, etc. Some of the guys may be out of town for the weekend and have a full schedule on a Monday and these rankings are part of the fun part of life and it just doesn’t get done that week.

We understand, but at the same time I have let some of the guys go in the past because they did not fulfill their commitment to the Kansas Media ranking team. The commitment is to send in their rankings each week for 9 weeks of the regular season. If they just want their name on the ranking team at the bottom of this page and send in their rankings once or twice during that 9 week season then I see them as not really wanting to participate and we unfortunately remove them from the team.

Another thing, I can hear someone out there saying, “How can Wichita Heights be ranked ahead of Bishop Carroll in the rankings this week after Bishop Carroll defeated Wichita Heights last Friday night 42-41?” My answer is because that is how the vote went this week. The vote was only 4 points apart between the two teams and in some ways was just like the game, close. Most guys probably think the next time these two play, Heights will win.

I have learned over the years that I only have one vote and can’t control how each of the Kansas Media Ranking Team votes.  And I never tell anyone how they should vote, nor should I.

The playoffs are coming and we will decide all of this on the field of play soon. Can’t hardly stand the wait!

We want to give a shout out to Coach Don Melby of Pike Valley (Scandia) he celebrated his 200th Career win last Friday night, with their impressive 58-8 victory over undefeated District 4 rival Rock Hills (Mankato). This is Coach Melby’s 35th year as a head coach. Coach Melby’s football team is 5-1 at the moment and ranked #4 in 8-man D-II.

This past Friday night was the week of the comeback victory:
Garden City trailed Wichita NW by the score of 27-0 at halftime. Garden won 46-34.

Valley Center trailed at halftime 28-14 and won 54-28 over Eisenhower.

Andale trailed Collegiate in the fourth quarter by 9 points and won 32-21. I watched that game online and didn’t think Andale had a chance to win this game after halftime.

Columbus trailed by 35-20 late in the game against Galena and won 36-35 on a two point conversion.

Those are just a few high lights from some wild games last Friday night. What is going to happen the rest of this season? One thing is for sure, you better play your best, until the final whistle!

We had some movement this week in Class 3A where Silver Lake has moved to the top of the pack after defeating Rossville and breaking their long winning streak. The other number ones just keep winning and moving along.

Big games this week include:
Junction City vs Manhattan
Mill Valley vs Bishop Miege
Andale vs Collegiate
Frontenac vs Labette County
Hoisington vs Nickerson
Halstead vs Pratt
St Francis vs Atwood
Dighton vs Wallace County

Every game in high school football is big and you only get a guaranteed 8 or 9 games. If you want more games you have to earn them with sweat, blood and tears during the season and during the off-season. Hope your team receives some extra games this year.
